Bulging or Herniated Discs

What are Discs?

Discs are located between the vertebrae of your spine. They perform an incredibly important job. Discs act as shock absorbers for your spinal cord. They have a hard outer shell and a soft inner shell filled with a gelatinous substance called nucleus pulposus. Think of them as a small jelly doughnut, absorbing the shock and friction between each of your spine’s precious vertebrae.

What are Bulging and Herniated Discs?

Sometimes, a disc’s soft inner filling can bulge and press on the outer portion of the spinal disc, which is pain sensitive. This is called a bulging disc. It can also herniate out of the shell and put pressure on the adjacent nerve. When the nucleus pushes out of the annulus fibrosus, it is called a herniated disc. There are many causes, symptoms, and treatments for bulging and herniated discs. If not taken care of properly, without your nucleus in the normal position, there can be painful symptoms.

Bulging and Herniated Disc Causes:

  • Car Accident
  • Poor posture or poor core
  • Torsion of disc
  • Back or other traumatic injury
  • Sports injury
  • Poor heavy lifting form
  • Repetitive motions from specific sports, sitting, standing, or driving
  • Reduced lower limb strength.
  • Genetically predisposed to having lesser density of fibrocartilaginous fibers

Bulging and Herniated Disc Symptoms:

The pressure on the nerve can cause:

  • Pain, including lower back pain and neck pain
  • Numbness
  • Weakness in the Leg or Foot
  • Muscle Spasm and Tightness: This leads to more pain and a vicious cycle for the sufferer.
