Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel and arch pain. The plantar fascia is a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot. This large, important tissue connects the toes to the heel and forms the arch of the foot. When the ligament is inflamed or torn, a stabbing pain of varying degrees is often felt near the heel. This is plantar fasciitis and it can make normal movement and daily activities incredibly painful and very difficult. It can also become a chronic issue if not treated.
An estimated 2 million people are afflicted with plantar fasciitis. The causes of this condition are highly variable. Sometimes the root can be found in tight calves, shin muscles, Achilles tendons or gluteus muscles. Other times, a foot trauma from a fall or other circumstance may the reason. Wearing poorly fitted shoes, having flat or high-arching feet, and rolling while walking are also common causes. People who stand, walk or run for long periods of time are also more prone to plantar fasciitis.
