Introducing EPAT / Shockwave Therapy

We are proud to introduce EPAT/Shockwave Therapy as a non-surgical treatment option for our patients suffering from acute, subacute and chronic pain in deep layers of soft tissue, like muscles, bones and tendons. This reparative solution helps restart the healing process in old injuries, resolve chronic inflammation, break up scar tissue, increase mobility and ease pain without the need for painkillers.

At Total Body Chiropractic we use the Storz Medical D-Actor 200 model to care for our patients. This equipment provides more versatility when treating various issues, so you can get the best therapy to meet your needs.

What is EPAT Therapy?

Also referred to as Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) or Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Treatment (EPAT®), Shockwave Therapy is a non-invasive procedure that sends acoustic waves deep into soft tissues that can’t be reached using standard chiropractic techniques or other tools. It is considered one of the most advanced and highly effective treatment options with an up to 90% success rate in many cases.

How Does Shockwave Therapy Work?

EPAT/Shockwave Therapy accelerates or activates self-healing through micro-trauma. By sending intense, short-energy waves traveling faster than the speed of sound to affected areas, this technology can help restart the healing process, especially in those with incorrectly, slow or non-healing injuries.

Shockwave treatment has multiple beneficial effects on the body:

  • Improves nutrient and blood flow to injured areas
  • Releases trigger points and muscle tension
  • Breaks up calcium deposits and scar tissue, allowing for tissue repair
  • Increases mobility and range of motion
  • Alleviates inflammation
  • Induces analgesic (pain relief) response that blocks pain sensation

What is the Shockwave Therapy Process?

EPAT/Shockwave Therapy is typically used after other chiropractic care techniques have been unsuccessful in treating your pain, but before turning to surgical or more invasive options. It is a non-invasive treatment and provides a significant improvement to pain.

Step 1: We will complete a full-body assessment to identify trouble areas.

Step 2: A special gel is applied to the site of the affected area, making your body more receptive to the shock waves.

Step 3: We will then use the transmitters to deliver the acoustic sound waves to the deep tissues.

What Conditions Can EPAT Treat?

This treatment option works well for soft tissue structures, like tendons, muscles and bones, and especially in areas where connective tissue meets the bone, like ligaments in the shoulders, elbows, hips and knees.

Because of its ability to reach and heal these areas, EPAT/Shockwave Therapy may provide significant reduction in pain and effectively treat numerous musculoskeletal conditions:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Heel pain/spur
  • Tennis elbow
  • Shoulder pain
  • Achilles tendon pain
  • Jumper’s knee
  • Neck pain
  • Back pain
  • Knee pain
  • Myofascial trigger points
  • Scar tissue treatment
  • Chronic tendinopathy
  • TMJ
  • Whiplash
  • Stress fractures
  • Shin splints

How Many EPAT/Shockwave Therapy Sessions Do I Need?

Generally, Shockwave Therapy will take about 3 to 5 sessions to resolve conditions, but with some chronic injuries it can take as long as 10 sessions for healing to fully occur. And the Shockwave Therapy itself lasts for about 5 minutes. However, depending on the extent of your injury or discomfort, the frequency and duration of your treatment will vary.

While some people will begin to feel noticeable relief in the treated area within 72 hours of the first session, it is imperative to complete your treatment for proper and total healing. After your initial visit, we will craft a unique treatment plan that you should follow for best results.

Shockwave therapy is not an appropriate treatment option for everyone, especially those who have a circulatory or nerve disorder, infection, a bone tumor or metabolic bone condition, open wounds at the treatment site, pregnant women, and those taking blood thinners.

How Much Does EPAT Therapy Cost?

Shockwave Therapy is an effective, affordable way to accelerate soft tissue healing and make a significant difference in treating chronic conditions and chronic pain. While the treatment does not presently meet the coverage criteria of major health insurance carriers, we have made the treatment sessions affordable for our patients at Total Body Chiropractic. With Shockwave Therapy, you can actually realize a long-term savings from having to reach an insurance deductible and/or make multiple co-pays for physical therapy. We would be happy to discuss if this treatment is right for you, the costs of the sessions, and our payment options.
