Bulging or Herniated Discs
Discs are located between the vertebrae of your spine. They perform an incredibly important job. Discs act as shock absorbers. They have a hard outer shell and a soft inner shell filled with a gelatinous substance called nucleus pulposus. Think of them as a small jelly doughnut, absorbing the shock and friction between each of your spine’s precious vertebrae.
Sometimes, a disc’s soft inner filling can bulge and press on the outer portion of the disc, which is pain sensitive. This is called a bulging disc. It can also herniate out of the shell and put pressure on the adjacent nerve. This is called a herniated disc. The pressure on the nerve causes pain, numbness and/or weakness in the leg or foot. In response to the pain, muscle spasm and tightness occurs. This leads to more pain and a vicious cycle for the sufferer. Thankfully, chiropractic care can help end the pain.
Chiropractic care is a non-invasive, non-surgical answer for bulging and herniated discs. First, we will complete a thorough examination that includes reviewing your medical history, completing a physical exam, and performing orthopedic and neurological exams. Through this process, we will determine if an x-ray or MRI is necessary to help with your diagnosis. We will then make a treatment recommendation based on your specific situation and health.
Surgery is not the only answer for bulging or herniated discs. Meet with your chiropractor to see if our effective, non-invasive treatments are a good option for you. Let’s work together to get to the root cause of your pain. Total Body Chiropractic & Massage can help you get out of the cycle of pain and back to living the life you love.
