At Bend Total Body Chiropractic, Massage & Acupuncture, we know that a good night’s sleep is essential to your physical, mental, and emotional health. Unfortunately, 1 in 3 people will struggle with insomnia at some point in their life. For our patients experiencing acute or chronic sleep problems, we recommend acupuncture for insomnia as part of a holistic treatment plan. Learn how this therapy can help you achieve a full night’s rest.
Insomnia describes a sleep disorder where you have trouble falling or staying asleep. However, it does not look the same for everyone. So, you may not even recognize you are dealing with this condition.
Insomnia May Look Like:
- Inability to sleep normally
- Getting less than 4-6 hours of sleep each night
- Taking more than 30 minutes to fall asleep
- Frequently and/or easily waking up throughout the night
- Waking up more than two times a night
- Frequent dreaming or disturbances
If you show any of these signs for months, weeks, or even just days at a time, you may benefit from an acupuncture session.
What is Acupuncture for Insomnia?
Acupuncture has been around for centuries as a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine. This therapy involves placing tiny, sterilized needles into precise points of the body to stimulate and rebalance various systems. The belief is that energy, known as Qi (pronounced ‘chee’) runs along pathways, called meridians in the body. Energy blockages within these meridians can lead to illness, hormonal imbalances, and trouble sleeping.
Acupuncture for insomnia provides a holistic alternative to prescription medications, which can be addictive, even when used as prescribed. This therapy works to address underlying factors that may be impacting your sleep schedule, by:
- Lowering stress
- Easing anxiety
- Decreasing pain
- Soothing mood disorders, like depression
- Reducing the occurrence and severity of sleep apnea
- Boosting circulation
- Rebalancing hormones, like melatonin for better rest
- Fixing general inconsistencies between organ systems
How Does Acupuncture for Insomnia Work?
We take the time to get to know each new client at Total Body Chiropractic, Massage & Acupuncture to provide individualized treatment and results. During your first appointment, the acupuncturists in Bend will discuss your medical history, daily habits and lifestyle, diet, sleep schedule, and any other areas of concern to determine the best route.
Your first session can last up to 90 minutes, with following sessions lasting from 45 minutes to an hour. After your practitioner places 5 to 20 needles in common acupuncture points for insomnia, like the hands and feet, you will lie still for about 30 minutes. Typically, you will undergo 2-3 sessions a week until you reach about 10 sessions. From there, we will reassess to determine whether your symptoms have improved enough for a maintenance plan.
We know that our patients achieve the best results when treated from a holistic standpoint. So, our staff will also provide recommendations about diet and exercise that may supplement your treatment plan. Acupuncture also works hand in hand with chiropractic care and massage to relax the body and encourage better rest as early as your first visit.
